How it All Began

The Watton Sports and Recreational Centre has roots dating back to July 1947, when Mr G Peeke-Vout, a local builder and WW1 veteran, raised the sum of £3000 to purchase 9 acres of land on the Dereham Road to create the Memorial Playing Fields to honour the memory of WW2 veterans and give local people a games field and simple pavilion. In 1968 representatives of local sports clubs came together to discuss building a Sports Centre for the town and in 1973 the main building was opened. On 3rd February 1975 the Watton Sports and Recreation Centre became a registered charity number 268128. Over the years the centre has expanded but is still run by a board of unpaid volunteer trustees for the benefit of the community.
